When investing in certified diamonds, understanding the difference between the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI) is essential. Both are world-class institutions, but they cater to different segments of the market.
1. GIA: The Industry Standard
Established in 1931, the GIA created the famous '4Cs' system and is widely regarded as the most rigorous and strict grading laboratory. A GIA certificate is the gold standard for natural diamonds, offering absolute security and resale consistency globally.
2. IGI: The Leader in Lab-Grown Diamonds
The IGI was founded in Antwerp in 1975 and has grown to become the dominant global laboratory for grading Lab-Grown Diamonds. They were the first major lab to grade lab-grown diamonds fully, providing clear, highly precise color and clarity grading details for synthesized stones.
3. The Grading Strictness
Historically, GIA has maintained slightly stricter grading for color and clarity than IGI. A diamond graded 'F' color by GIA might sometimes be graded 'E' color by IGI. This strictness premium is why GIA natural diamonds trade at slightly higher price points globally.
